Bold, explosive color for your garden all season long and a showy garden bed all summer and into fall you can't beat Sombrero® Lemon Yellow Coneflower PP30,116 (Echinacea x 'Balsomemyim'). A blockbuster new Plants that Work® color, this vivid Lemon Yellow Coneflower will reflect the warmth of the sun itself in your garden!
There are many modern cultivars of this great American native, but right now, the Sombrero® series is right at the top of the list of excellent new plants. Sombrero® Lemon Yellow is a blockbuster new color that will look as fresh and current in July as it does in October! The vivid yellow petals surround the spikey yellow centers that are perfect landing pads for beneficial insects and pollinators galore!
Plant Sombrero® Lemon Yellow in full sun and average soil and watch it explode with super-charged blooming power. It is compact but covers itself in lightly scented bright yellow, daisy-like flowers for months on end. The unique raised centers have curious colorful centers that will usually be filled with pollinators.
Emerging in early spring with bright green foliage, the blooms arrive by summer and rise high above the mature, dark-green foliage. These herbaceous perennials are easy to grow and have a wonderful compact habit in full sun throughout USDA planting zones 4 to 9.
Planting and Application:
Perfect for the perennial border, a natural meadow, a butterfly or Pollinator Garden, and a wildlife garden! Add that explosion of color for the whole growing season! Prairies and meadows gleam with these bright blooms, Cottage borders, or mixed perennial borders become spectacles as Sombrero® freely spreads and naturalizes without becoming a problem.
They look great in containers and planters, these are smaller, tidy plants that will be the highlight of any plant grouping. Coneflowers are natural members of the cutting garden. Remember the more you cut, the more they flower! For bold floral arrangements and long-lasting bouquets, the Sombrero® Lemon Yellow Coneflower will make a standout specimen indoors and out!
Thriving in those hot, dry spots in the garden, Echinacea loves the sun and excels in tougher conditions. Xeric gardens and Rock gardens are perfect for these tough native cultivars, and the deep roots thrive in drought but also make them have increased survivability for fire! Include these plants in your fire-wise landscaping plan with other hot and jewel-toned flowers!
Boost your curb appeal by running them all along your front walkway in a narrow planting bed or in that hell strip along the sidewalk. Space them 12 inches apart in a zigzagging planting pattern. Measure from the center of one to the center of the next. This technique can be used to create large mass planting to cover a wide, open space. Just add more plants in additional rows, then mulch between plants. Be sure to keep new beds weeded until they grow together.
Birds love the seeds in the high central cones and if you let the flowers dry on the plant they make striking winter silhouettes the birds will love! Leaving the ornate seed heads will provide winter interest until spring.
Renters, don't feel left out. You can grow Lemon Yellow in large outdoor containers to decorate your sun-soaked balcony, patio, porch or entryway. Keep them watered for the best results! Plant these vivid sunspots in mixed Planters on sunny porches and patios to attract all the attention to your yard or balcony!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Once Lemon Yellow is established it will bring you years of pleasure, becoming more heat and drought tolerant as the years go by. Radiant color glows in the full sun, which helps create stronger stems and more blooms that return vigorously and profusely!
Fertile well-drained-soil-loving and very drought tolerant once established, Echinacea Sombrero® Lemon Yellow Coneflower also loves the dryer waste areas and fills them with vivid color! Even tolerating clay soils, just as long as they drain. In winter the crowns can rot in soggy conditions, so ensure you have great drainage or create it by planting into a mound or raised bed. Or plant them in containers.
Use Nature Hills Root Booster when planting to give your plants the micronutrients and beneficial soil amendments they need. Follow the directions on the package. Mulch and regular fertilizer give them a boost.
During the first season, please pay close attention to watering. Once these herbaceous Perennials' deep, Prairie-style roots are well-established in your soil, Sombrero® Coneflowers become waterwise. You'll get more blooms over the growing season with a regular schedule of supplemental water. Do give it supplemental water in extended periods of extreme heat, or if you are growing this hot little number in large containers. You'd hate to miss a single, cheerful bloom, after all!
Deadhead the blooms after they are fully open for indoor flower arrangements. You'll encourage a new flush of blooms with this quick task, and decorate your home at the same time. Leave the last blooms of the season standing to give you some much-needed winter interest. They'll develop their beautiful seed heads that help feed local songbirds. In early spring, remove the spent flowers to within an inch of the ground.
